Matthew Griswold (June 6, 1833 – May 19, 1919) was an American Congressman from Erie, Pennsylvania. Born in Lyme, Connecticut, he was the grandson of Roger Griswold, Governor of Connecticut. He was engaged in teaching and in agricultural pursuits for a number of years, and was elected to various local offices. He was a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives in 1862 and 1865.
In 1866 he moved to Erie, Pennsylvania and engaged in manufacturing as a founder of Griswold Manufacturing Company. From 1866 until the late 1950s, the Griswold Manufacturing Company made various cast iron implements for home use, including many types hardware. Their selection of cookware included skillets, muffin pans, roasters, bread molds, waffle irons, kettles, Dutch ovens and even miniatures. These pieces are very well and widely known and have stood the test of time. They are the items most often found by collectors today. Since they were usually made with black iron, collectors easily recognize them today.
The distinctive mark on the back of each piece frequently confirms a Griswold find, but the company actually used a number of different signatures during the life of the company.
Griswold was elected as a Republican to the 52nd Congress, but was not a candidate for renomination in 1892. He was again elected to the 54th Congress in 1894 but was not a candidate for renomination in 1896.
