In the course of doing Bissell family history research, one comes across many interesting branches in the family tree. While they don't lead to ancestors but rather to "cousins," they are often fascinating glimpses into American history. One such branch is that of Eunice Olcott and Noah Bissell , who had eight children. The Richard Bissell Family ancestor here is Noah and Eunice's son Solomon, who married Tirzah Pierce.
And here's an interesting branch on the tree (information principally from Families of Western New York by William Richard Cutter, Genealogical Publishing Co., 1912), one which ends up winding its way to another Bissell cousin, Grover Cleveland:
Solomon Bissell's older brother Noah was born 29 Sep 1777. Noah's son John Bissell (thus, Solomon and Tirzah's nephew) was born in Pompey, Onondaga County, N.Y. in 1808. When John was a boy, his father moved to Oneida County, N.Y. near Rome, N.Y. and through which passed the Erie Canal. John became interested in canal boat building and contracting. He built a section of the Black River Canal, a feeder of the Erie Canal from northern New York state. Although the canal was only 35 miles long (it was originally intended to go all the way north to the St. Lawrence River) it had 109 locks to raise and lower the canal boats 693 feet in its short length. Construction began in 1848 and part of the canal was in service by 1850. It was the longest-surviving of the feeder canals of the Erie Canal, staying in at least partial use until after World War I, about 1920. The Black River Canal Museum is in Boonville, N.Y.

This John Bissell moved to Buffalo, N.Y. and organized the Bissell Transportation Company, running canal boats between Albany and Buffalo, the first individual boat line operated on the Erie Canal. His son Arthur graduated from Yale University and returning to Buffalo entered law practice in 1871. His firm eventually became Cleveland, Bissell & Sicard, the lead partner being Stephen Grover Cleveland, elected President of the United States in 1885 and again for a second term in 1893. Arthur Bissell refused Cleveland's offers of appointment during the President's first term of office, preferring to continue his law practice, but became Postmaster General of the United States during Cleveland's second term.
