Notes.

JOHN BURROWS AND MARY IRELAND.

John Burrows' parents were Robert Burrows and Mary Ireland. Mary was the widow of Samuel Ireland [GMD] who, according to LongIslandGenealogy.com, came with Mary to America on the Increase in 1635; settled in Wethersfield; and when Samuel died in 1645, Mary married Robert Burrows (or Burroughs). The source is John Hotten, "Original Lists of Persons of Quality", p. 65, Samuel Ireland age 32 and his wife Marie age 30 left London for New England on the ship Increase in April 1635. They had with them their daughter Martha Ireland, age 1 1/2.

Don’t know when Robert came to New England. Another source says Mary was b. 1605 in England, probably Yorkshire and died 2 Oct 1672 in Mystic, CT.

Sources on Burrows and Ireland include 1672, December: Mary, relict of Robert Burrows died. "New England Marriages Prior to 1700" compiled by Clarence Almon Torrey; p. 123; The Genealogical Publishing Company, Inc.; Baltimore, Maryland; 1985 (974.0 NEa/Marriage SCGS)

ELIZABETH MATHER.

Elizabeth’s brother was Richard Mather [GMD] (b. 1596) who was the father of Increase Mather and grandfather of Cotton Mather. Thomas and Marguerite were married 14 Sep 1591 in Lowton, Winwick Parish, Lancashire, England. Elizabeth probably born in 1618 but some uncertainty about exact date, per Mather family website.

HENRY WOODWARD.

Dr. Woodward was born 22 May 1607 in MuchWorton, Lancashire, England and died in Northampton, MA 7 Apr 1683, killed by a lightning strike in a grist mill. His father was Thomas Woodward, mother Elizabeth Tynen.

Thomas Dewey was a resident of Windsor, CT and the ancestor of Admiral Dewey and Governor Thomas Dewey of New York.

The Hatfield Attack

Robert and Editha also had a daughter Sarah (Thomas’ sister) who married Samuel Kellogg.  Sarah and her infant son Joseph were killed by Indians Sept. 19, 1677 in the attack on Hatfield.  Her son Samuel was taken prisoner by the Indians and carried to Canada; he eventually returned to Colchester, CT., bought land from his brother Nathaniel and married Hannah Dickinson.

While men were out working in the fields, the Indians attacked, burning houses, killing 12 people and capturing 21.  It is likely that Samuel was returned from Canada by Benjamin Waite and Stephen Jennings, two Hatfield men whose wives and children were taken captive.

Waite, an accomlished Indian scout, and Jennings got approved as agents to bargain for the captives, built a canoe and went up Lake George and Lake Champlain in the winter to Quebec City, Canada.  They may have been the first English colonists on Lake Champlain.  They were able to secure the release of 17 captives and returned to New England in May 1678.  A quarter century later, Waite was killed in the Deerfield Massacre that was part of Queen Anne’s War.
